A Pint of Cream

Red and Taupe Suit

Based on the Portrait of

Archduke Rudolph by Alonso Sanchez Coello

Archduke Rudolf, the later Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. of Austria, son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II. of Austria and Infanta Maria of Spain, 1567

Project: Linen shirt with lace ruff at cuff and collar, taupe patterned doublet with minorly slashed with red dupioni. Padded trunk hose paned in pattern taupe, with red dupioni under, and taupe cod piece. Taupe leggings. Red velvet Jerkin with gold trim and buttons.

Oh my Gods!!! Ah geeze! Look at those panes! It's like strapwork! Sewn down it looks like, so it's not a true weave far as I can tell. If you look closely it looks like it's sewn down using a running embroidery stitch. It certainly appears that each pane is a solid piece, and probably are thick and stiff with layer over layer- at least four to six- per pane, which would make them stiff.

Anyways, the trunkhose is stuffed, but only as much to give it bulge at the lower edge. Between the stuffing and panes appears to be either taupe silk or satin...

Originally, the Jerkin was of black velvet, but since I only have red dupioni, the red velvet seems to be a good and complimentary match.
